Thac Ba Hydroelectric Power Plant is the first Hydro Power Plant to be constructed in Vietnam. Field research and designing works were carried out from 1959 to 1961. After ten years of construction, on October 5, 1971, the plant started the unit No. 1, to connect to National Power Grid since then.

Thac Ba hydropower Plant ,which was established in accordance with decision no. 224 ĐT-NCQLKT-1 dated August, 19, 1971 signed by the minister of Electricity and Coal Ministry was primarily a member of Electric power company,; and after that became a dependent entity of Electricity I Company under decision no. 478 NL/TCCB-LĐ dated June, 3, 1993 by Minister of Ministry of Energy.

On March,04, 1995, Minister of Energy Ministry issued decision No. 100/NL/TCCB-LĐ on transfer Thac Ba Hydro Power Plant under the management of Electricity Vietnam. On March,3, 2005, Thac Ba hydro power plant was changed into Thac Ba hydro power company – an independent entity of EVN(Electricity Vietnam) in conjunction with decision no. 19/2005/QĐ-BCN by Ministry of Industry.

- Produce and trade electricity
- Manage, operate, repair, service, overhaul and renovate hydro power and architectural works, equipment for hydropower plant and transformation station; experiment, adjust electrical devices - Trading, import-export materials and equipment.
- Consult and project construction investment work, consult the supervision of constructing electrical works
- Invest electrical sources and net work construction
- Provide training on managing, operating , servicing and repair devices for electric factory.

Thac Ba Hydro Power Plant was the first one in Vietnam. Thac Ba Hydro Power Joint Stock company is one of 7 hydro power plant of EVN. With the capacity of 120MW, the company’s capacity occupies about 2.09% of the total power generating output, and make up 1.05% of the total national output capacity. The company’s units have been operated continuously for over 35 years, including three units, each of them has the capacity of 40 MW (40MW × 3) using Soviet technology equipment. With specific conditions of water resources, the plant’s capacity is 120 MW. Average output of the plant per year reaches 400.000.000 kWh .

 Thac Ba hydro power Plant has mainly completed to upgrade architectural constructions. Has renovated some important equipment in the whole manufacturing line, ensure a good production capacity, supply electricity stably and effectively. Build up the plant to be more spacious and modern. The working environment has been continuously improved.

- Implement the company’s comprehensive innovation project to increase production capacity, ensuring continuous and safe operation of the devices. The plan to replace the equipment and units in the plant has been approved by EVN. At present, the company has been implementing the plant of overhauling and upgrading 3 units and the whole plant as well in the period of 2003 -2006. Gradually put forward to modernizing the plant from now on to 2010 to meet the requirements of the national industrialization and modernization cause in the following years.
